Left out on purpose: ad spend and returns, which vary enough between stores that a prefilled guess would do more harm than good. The subtle line is the fixed-cost amortization. A $39-per-month Basic plan is invisible day to day, but at 20 orders a month it is $1.95 buried in every order, while at 400 orders it fades to about a dime. Every app subscription joins the same pile and gets divided by the same order count — which is why two stores with identical products can have meaningfully different per-order profit.

The formula, spelled out

Net profit per order = order value − product cost − outbound shipping − (order value × card rate + fixed card fee) − (monthly plan and apps ÷ orders per month). With the prefilled US Basic online rate, the card term is order value × 2.9% + $0.30. Every term is per-order on purpose: monthly P&L hides which orders carry the store, and pricing, free-shipping thresholds and bundle decisions all need the per-order view.

Worked example: a $52 order at 130 orders a month

A home-goods store averages a $52 order. Product cost per order is $16 and shipping runs $7 in labels and packaging. Card processing at 2.9% plus 30 cents comes to $52 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.81. The store pays $39 a month for Shopify Basic and does 130 orders, so the fixed slice is $39 ÷ 130 = $0.30 per order.

Net profit per order: $52 − $16 − $7 − $1.81 − $0.30 = $26.89, a 51.7% net margin before any advertising. Drop the same store to 60 orders in a slow month and the fixed slice rises to $0.65, trimming profit to $26.54 — barely noticeable at this order value. Common mistakes in Shopify profit math

• Counting shipping charged to the buyer as pure revenue while never tallying what labels actually cost.
